SVOD (Subscription Video on Demand)

SVOD (Subscription Video on Demand)

Subscription Video on Demand (SVOD) is a subscription-based video streaming model that gives users unlimited access to a catalogue of films, series, documentaries and other video content for a fixed monthly or annual fee. SVOD services are typically ad-free, although some providers now also offer lower-priced subscription plans that include advertising.

SVOD is one of the main forms of over-the-top (OTT) video distribution and differs from other video-on-demand models such as AVOD (Advertising Video on Demand), TVOD (Transactional Video on Demand) and BVOD (Broadcast Video on Demand).

SVOD in Belgium & Luxembourg
Netflix remains one of the leading SVOD services in Belgium and Luxembourg. Other major subscription streaming services include Disney+, Prime Video, HBO Max and Apple TV+.

Alongside these international SVOD platforms, local broadcasters offer streaming services such as VRT MAX, VTM GO, GoPlay and RTL play. These services primarily operate as BVOD (Broadcast Video on Demand) platforms rather than pure SVOD services, although some also offer premium subscription options.

Competition between streaming providers is increasingly driven by exclusive content, local productions, sports rights, bundling with telecommunications services and the introduction of lower-priced ad-supported subscription plans.
